"Hi Ho, Hi Ho,
I don't have to go."”
By Douglas Miller
I can still see those seven scruffy little guys singing and marching to work as Snow White stayed at home to do all of the housework. In those days, that’s how it was: the men went off to work and “mom” stayed at home to tend to all of the work needed to be done at home.
Then all that changed. In the 60s, 70s and 80s women were made to feel that there was something wrong with them if they chose to stay home and be a wife and mom. “A woman's place is in the house and senate", "Women, you can have it all!". "I can bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan".
But wait. My mom cleaned the whole house, did all the cooking, did all the shopping, drove us to various events and appointments, coached us, raised kids/encouraged us, disciplined us, taught us, mediated our social problems, and mended our injuries, did all the laundry, and handled most of the business of the family, managed our budget, banking and finances! She had at least ten jobs. She didn’t get paid. Often she wasn’t even appreciated. She wasn’t recognized except for one day a year. No wonder women’s liberation took root so quickly.
But after the roar of songs protesting floor-scrubbing faded from the radio waves, women began to discover that, not only were they now working outside of the home a good ten hours or so with the commute, but all that other work at home didn't go away. Many women that worked outside of the home found themselves spending almost all they earned on day care, commuting expenses "gas, parking, maintenance " and wardrobe, while, what they really wanted, to enjoy time with their kids and be a family, was forced to the back burner. Many working women felt like slaves.
The biggest complaint was they had no time to spend with their kids. They grew tired of trading time for money. They could always make money, but the time lost with their children they would never get back. They grew tired of being exhausted, constantly feeling guilty, always behind, and never having a moment for themselves, or their relationships. The divorce rate soared.
As a husband and father I could see that it troubled women deeply. I was fortunate that I was a firefighter and with my schedule I was able to help raise my daughter and help with a lot of the household responsibilities. I found out firsthand what "moms work" was, and it was intense!
Times have changed again. A relatively new paradigm arose. Moms started to stay at home to work. Stay at home moms’ found a new way to work from home.
Jobs for moms were springing up everywhere. They found small business ideas a good way to make a living from home. Moms became free to be moms, and at the same time, were able to put their talents and passions into their home based businesses. Moms who decide to start their own businesses do it so they can be home with the children. They feel they are providing a more stable and secure environment for their little ones. They also have the flexibility of schedules for doctor appointments and childhood illnesses and school activities.

I met a stay at home mom that lives in my building. I would see her out with her baby in one of those "jogger strollers", always with one or two dogs, too, but always different dogs. I at the mailbox one day I asked her about the number of dogs she has. She laughed and told me that they're not all hers.
She went on to explain that she is a stay at home mom, and her husband works a regular 8 to 5. She is working on getting her home based internet business up and running and that she walks dogs for people in the building for extra money. They pay her $25.00 to walk each dog she’s earning $100.00 to $150.00 a day!
